Designer Thembani Mubochwa takes C0ND0M dress to Egypt. Fashion designer Thembani Mubochwa reckons Zimbabwe has plenty to offer when it comes to his field where creativity is a prerequisite.

Mubochwa, who won hearts of many with the “The C0ND0M Dress” at this year’s African Fashion Reception in Egypt, said he was humbled by the support he got. The exhibition, which ended yesterday, was held under the theme: “Economic Empowerment and entrepreneurship Promotion for Women and Youth to Realise the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA), Africa 2063 Development Agenda and Sustainable Development (SDGs).

Thembani, who rubbed shoulders with 14 other designers from across the world, could not hide his elation. Speaking to H-Metro from Egypt, Thembani described the event as an eye-opener.

“We just finished now, I’m so speechless, the exposure was just too much,” he said. The Mufakose bred designer, who is no new-comer to prestigious exhibitions, said exchanging notes with other designers from all over Africa and England was enlightening. “You get to appreciate a lot about excellence and professionalism about art industry, platforms like these always humble me,” he said.

Despite the exposure he gets, Thembani has vowed to continue working hard. “A lot still needs to be done… I will continue on my materials and embellishments then the handmade will play a big role in my new pieces adding more weight on my pieces,” he said. He also praised fellow Zimbabweans for putting Zimbabwe on the world map.

“We are really doing well because it’s my second time showcasing at this platform. “They received our country so well and my efforts of fighting HIV were received so well and we became so unique from other countries.

“It made our country different and outstanding, the agenda was pushed, I did touch the theme,” he added. According to his handlers back home, Thembani Mubochwa has been hailed for using fashion as an advocacy tool.

“Mubochwa is on record for using his designs to bring to the fore topical issues first with the Elephant dress which celebrated Zimbabwean Elephants while raising awareness on the various issues affecting them. “Most recently Mubochwa launched the PVC collection worn most notably by songstress Cindy.

“The collection is meant to bring to discussion Climate Change issues. “However, it appears for the Fashion Designer, the advocacy journey has not ended with recent revelations that he will soon be addressing HIV and AIDS issues through his Fashion,” reads part of his statement.

After the Egypt affair, he now awaits to take part at the World Aids Day commemorations in Rwanda which will also coincide with the ICASA conference. He also hailed various organisations he worked with throughout his journey. These comprise Gumisayi Bonzo of Transsmart Trust, Collen Magobeya of Pech Media Trust and Tsitsi Ndabambi of Protection of Adults and Children Trust.
