Former SA President Jacob Zuma faces up to 25 years imprisonment

Former SA President Jacob Zuma faces up to 25 years imprisonment. The KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg handed down judgment denying Zuma a permanent stay of prosecution on Friday.

Former South African President Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Mhlanganyelwa Zuma faces up to 25 years imprisonment if found guilty of during a trial where he is facing 18 charges of fraud, corruption, money laundering and racketeering.

Zuma is accused of taking bribes from French defense company Thales in connection with a 1999 multi-billion dollar arms purchase, which he oversaw as vice president. In 2005, Zuma’s former financial adviser Schabir Shaik Shaik was found guilty of fraud and corruption for the same payments

The 77-year-old’s trial is scheduled to being on October 15. A joint investigative team looked at the arms deal in 2000. This team consisted of the auditor general, the public defender and the national director of public prosecution. Their published November 2001 report stated that there were no grounds to believe that the government had acted illegally or improperly.

But, in October 2009, documents provided by Cape Town businessman Richard Young, whose company, CCII Systems, lost the tender for the navy’s new corvettes, showed their initial report had been doctored, factual bases had been removed and its conclusions changed.
