Khama Billiat finally speaks on that rumoured Sundowns retain

Khama Billiat finally speaks on that rumoured Sundowns retain. Khama Billiat, who was the subject of a transfer saga between his current club Kaizer Chiefs and his former employers Mamelodi Sundowns before the window period closed, has finally opened up about his state of mind at the time.

Speaking to journalists ahead of the Shell Helix Ultra Cup, a mid-season friendly match coincidentally between the two clubs at FNB Stadium tomorrow, the attacker discussed, in detail, the “rumours” and his apparently strained relationship with his Amakhosi coach Ernst Middendorp.

The Siya crew broke the news in July that Downs had tabled an offer of around R15-million to try to buy back Billiat, a year after he left Chloorkop as a free agent to join Chiefs. “I was trying not to read a lot and trying to stay focussed and not be distracted and it demanded a lot of mental strength from me,” Billiat told journalists.

“I think I could have also done better, but I had to stay focused. I can’t confirm that (contact from Sundowns) because I don’t know what was happening. I was just reading up on social media. And wow! I just thought it was just rumours – to hear people say I wanted to go back. I am happy at Chiefs and it is my home and I have to make my environment as best as I want it to be and it’s exactly what I had hoped for. I hope it will be like this forever.”

Middendorp blasted Billiat recently for reporting for national team duty when he was supposed to be recovering from a pelvic injury, comments which landed the coach in hot water with football manager Bobby Motaung.

“We spoke about it. As players we always want to play football and be there whenever we are called (for national team duty). I had to go since the club allowed me to go and it was solved in a professional way. It’s part of our career, things can be said and things can be done. We have to accept it and deal with it the best way we can,” was Billiat’s response.
