Nelson Chamisa’s supporters languish in remand, bail ruling postponed again

Nelson Chamisa’s supporters languish in remand, bail ruling postponed again. Learnmore Mapiye, the presiding magistrate failed to come to court saying she was not feeling well. She has been given three days off sick, forcing Harare provincial magistrate, Vongai Muchuchti Guwuriri, to postpone the case to the 21st of October next week highlighting she was not familiar with the matter.

A bail application by 11 suspected MDC supporters who are facing charges of assaulting a police officer in Harare Central has been postponed for the second time after the presiding magistrate was not in attendance.

Those in remand prison are: Hilton Tamangani (29), Evans Chinyanga (39), Tichaona Maziya (22), Petros Kaesa (44), Tafadzwa Madziwa (23), Lovemore Chitengo(42), Robson Mutseta (31), Hillary Nyawasha (29), Denford Mlambo (41), Blessing Chirodza (41) and David Tawanda Tekere (35).

On Saturday lastweek, the 11 accused who are suspected to be MDC supporters reportedly assaulted a police officer, Tatenda Sibiya, at Chicken Inn, Jullius Nyerere Way and Kwame Nkrumah Avenue, declaring some areas next to Morgan Tsvangirai House (Harvest House) a no go area for police officers.

After committing the offence, it is alleged the suspects flee to a base at Robinson House where they were later arrested.

The state is opposing bail arguing the gang is facing a serious offence. The 12th suspect is still on the run. However, the defence lawyers argue that their clients were caught in a dragnet arrest while going about their business in town.
