Rumour – Robert Mugabe always travelled with a briefcase of coup money

Rumour – Robert Mugabe always travelled with a briefcase of coup money. The sensationally claims have been made by international economics, business and politics publication, The Economist.

In an ironic twist, the late former President Robert Mugabe is reported to have always travelled around the world with a huge suitcase full of money to use in case there was a coup against him while he was outside the country.

In an article on how corrupt African leaders hid their ill-gotten proceeds outside their countries, The Economist wrote, the late Robert Mugabe, who misruled Zimbabwe for three decades, always travelled with a suitcase of “coup money”, in case he was ousted while abroad. Cash piles must be looked after, mind.

However, in a case of irony, Mugabe was deposed in November 2017 via a military coup while he was in the country and replaced by his former henchman, President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Mugabe never forgave Mnangagwa for the betrayal and denied a bitter man.

So strong was his bitterness, that he refused to be buried at the National Heroes Acre as it would give Mnangagwa a chance to pontificate over his body. Instead, he was buried in his rural home village of Kutama in Zvimba.

Soon after his removal from power, Mugabe and his family featured on a list of individuals and companies who were purportedly externalising public funds.
