We have warned them enough says ED. With inflation on the upward trend almost daily, businesses have also had to make adjustments to their prices – sometimes unfairly, though. President Emmerson Mnangagwa Thursday warned retailers against the random hike of basic goods, saying the government was ready to clamp down on the vice.
Mnangagwa told rural councillors at the first edition of the Rural District Councilors (RDC) meeting in Harare on Thursday that it was now time to crack the whip on errant business. “Some retailers are changing prices almost overnight on the same stock. There should be nothing like that. We warned them for a long time and we are now in a position to act,” Mnangagwa said.
He added that government would not standby and watch while cartels plotted the downfall of Zimbabwe’s socio-economic fabric. “We are not going to watch and look at them doing what they are doing. We have the whip and government is going to use it to stop the price hikes,” he said.
Mnangagwa said time for mere rhetoric was over. “Now, this is the time to show that what they are doing is inhuman and only a long whip will correct their waywardness,” Mnangagwa said.
Prices of basics commodities like sugar, cooking oil, mealie-meal, rice and beans prices have been increasing almost daily, with business trying to keep pace with trends on the United States dollar black market rates against the Zim dollar. The government has so far not taken any action to ensure that prices of goods and services are kept on check.
