Government fires 77 doctors as health crisis escalates. In a development which is likely to be met with outrage by medical professionals, the government has fired 77 doctors for demanding better wages and working conditions.
The Health Services Board (HSB) fired 77 doctors who refused to attend disciplinary proceedings for failing to report for work after the government instructed the doctors to return to work. The doctors have been on strike for the past 63 days.
However, the doctors argued that they were not on strike. They insisted that they did not have the means and resources to allow them to report for duty arguing that they were incapacitated by their poor remuneration.
HSB chairman Dr Paulinus Sikosana told state media, 77 of the 80 doctors were found guilty of absenting themselves from duty without leave or reasonable cause for days ranging from five or more and discharged from the health service.
