Chippa United coach Mapeza: Even top coaches in the world have been fired. The Chilli Boys are sitting rock-bottom of the log and after their 2-0 loss to Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday night, things are not looking too hot for the Zimbabwean.
Chippa United are known for not believing in patience when it comes to coaches and their current mentor Norman Mapeza is well aware of that.
Chippa are five points behind their relegation rivals after 10 league matches and have only managed to put four points on the board. It seems it’s the season for firing coaches too. Cape Town City recently let go of Benni McCarthy and Polokwane City parted ways with Zlatko Krmpotic on Friday.
Asked if he felt any pressure of losing his job, Mapeza was realistic. “You know in this industry you know there will be a day you resign or be sacked as a coach,” he said.
“Top coaches in the world have been sacked. I’m not saying I’m one of the top coaches, but I’m just giving you an example. “Guys like Jose Mourinho have been sacked, guys like my idol Fabio Capello was sacked by Real Madrid after winning the championship.”
Mapeza says when he joined Chippa he was aware of what might happen and if the chairman fires him now, he won’t have any problem and would be proud of what he has done in the Absa Premiership.
“When I came here I just wanted to have a feel of this environment. If tomorrow the owner of the club [Chippa Mpengesi] says ‘look you’ve failed’ I would take that and go with my head up. At least I’ve shown people a little bit of myself. “I won’t leave this place with my head down, no. I will go back to Zimbabwe and rest. Maybe I will get another opportunity somewhere. As coaches we are always on the move.”
To avoid become the eighth coach in the last two years to be sacked by Mpengesi, Mapeza can help his case by beating a rejuvenated AmaZulu away from home at Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday night.
