New Minister Jenfan Muswere’s crucial role in Mugabe coup revealed. This comes after the competency of new ICT Minister Jenfan Muswere was questioned after an interview of him being questioned about Artificial Intelligence (AI) went viral on social media. The then Deputy Minister of ICT’s performance in the interview is rather underwhelming.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been accused of rewarding people who helped him to come to power with cushy government positions regardless of their qualifications. The interview led to many questioning how Muswere was appointed and it was revealed that he actually played a crucial role in the removal of former President Robert Mugabe in November 2017.
An excerpt from the Douglas Rogers’ book Two Weeks in November: The Astonishing Inside Story of the Coup That Toppled Mugabe Muswere was intimately involved in spiriting Mnangagwa outside the country. After the plan to have Mnangagwa airlifted outside the country on medical grounds was foiled, Muswere actually travelled to the Mocambique border with Mnangagwa where the President famously declared that the border jumped.
Muswere then returned to Harare to organise transport for Mnangagwa from Mozambique to South African as well as to plan and mobilize people for the March against Mugabe. An excerpt the book reads,
…Meanwhile, as the failed medivac was being arranged, Jenfan Muswere had driven back to the Helensvale house three times to get food, clothes and documents. “I drove the back way, down Borrowdale Brook Road, past the Blue Roof to avoid suspicion.” Presidential Guard soldiers stood sentry at its ornate gates. Behind its high walls, the President and First Lady were enjoying a peaceful night.
…You want the closing of a circle? These are the offices of Connecor, the investment company belonging to Emmerson Jr and his Indian friend, KC Shetty, mentioned in the prologue of this book. Junior had turned it over to Dr Jenfan Muswere, one of the people who’d helped ED escape, and Jenfan had turned it into a political command centre for Lacoste operations.
They called it The Pentagon. One of the reasons so many people had gathered in the Avenues for the march, it turned out, was because Jenfan had distributed free fuel, water and printed posters to Lacoste supporters from this very building. Moreover, this past couple of days, assisted by Monica Mutsvangwa, war veterans and allies in the Youth League, Jenfan had worked with ZANU-PF’s ten provincial committees to coordinate and drive the resolutions to recall Mugabe as party leader, reinstate ED and expel Grace and leading members of G40.
Muswere communicated progress back to the safe house in Pretoria where ED and Junior were still poring over the Constitution and consulting with lawyers as to how to impeach Mugabe. Between calls to the provinces, Muswere joined the march or watched it from the windows and sent WhatsApp messages and photos to Junior about the sea of people on the streets outside.
the momentum is gathering – he says in one early Saturday morning message – it’s massive Good work Cde well done – Junior replies. whites in trucks walking with locals – Muswere says. (I wonder later, reading those messages, if that’s me and my friends he has spotted. We were right there.) Push comrade push, it’s the last hour – Junior responds – the old man must go he’s gone – says Muswere confidently. They sound like puppet masters.
…The following afternoon, Sunday, November 19th, ZANU-PF’s Central Committee met to follow through on those provincial resolutions that Jenfan Muswere and Monica Mutsvangwa had helped coerce from that building in the Avenues in the previous two days. And so it happened: after almost 40 years as leader of the party that brought him to power, Mugabe was recalled, and Grace, Moyo, Kasukuwere and several other G40 stalwarts expelled.
…On Friday, November 24th, 2017… Emmerson Mnangagwa was sworn in as Zimbabwe’s new President in a ceremony at Harare’s National Sports Stadium. The entire escape team was there –Junior and his twin brothers, looking snappy in designer suits, as well as cousin Tarry, Limping Jack, Jenfan Muswere …
…He appointed Jenfan Muswere, who had done so much of the leg work during the escape and securing the recall resolutions, Deputy Minister of Information, Communications, Technology and Cyber Security.)
Responding to the issue on social media, the opposition MDC said: As with @energymutodi Dinfo @edmnangagwa again has exposed himself appointing #Incompetent ICT minister as a reward for participating in the #COUP as for ED crooks and #Corrupt individuals are his #Team #Zimbabwe #We have a reason to keep fighting until justice served.
