The government speaks on closure of mortuaries. On Wednesday afternoon Member of Parliament Honourable Chidakwa asked the Deputy Minister of Energy and Power Development Magna Mudyiwa, “Government mortuaries are rejecting dead bodies citing lack of electricity so where are people supposed to take these bodies since its government responsibility to preserve these bodies.”
Government has professed ignorance over the load shedding of electricity in Beitbridge hospital that has led to the hospital facility shutting its mortuary.
Honourable Mudyiwa said, “I don’t know why these mortuary are rejecting the bodies, but we have tried as a ministry to ring-fence areas that have mortuaries so that they will always have electricity
“Our responsibility as a ministry is to provide electricity which we are doing with the little energy that we have.” Beitbridge hospital told the public that the electricity challenges affecting them did not allow them to fully operate the mortuary.
Zimbabwe has been facing electricity challenges that have forced the power utility to load shed electricity at some instances up to 18 hours. The government is pinning hopes on the Batoka hydro plant that is being constructed on the Zambesi river.
