Striking doctors: Strive Masiyiwa is trying to arm-twist us on behalf of govt

Striking doctors: Strive Masiyiwa is trying to arm-twist us on behalf of govt. The doctors who held a meeting this morning in Harare resolved to continue with their strike citing financial incapacitation. They said that they would only return to work once the government has addressed its grievances which include the supply of medicines and essential tools for work.

The Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA) has rejected the offer made by Strive Masiyiwa’s Higher Life Foundation for them to return to work. Below is an update following the meeting…

Following the solidarity meeting we had today, it was agreed that we should STOP applying because HLF is trying to arm-twist us into accepting.

We have received information that members are now being forced to sign assumption of duty, which is now forcing our members back to work, also the government is asking for a list of those who applied which shows their finger in this HLF plan.

So we are advising our members to withhold the HLF application processes with immediate effect. We will patiently wait in the trenches till there is a reasonable offer from the government

Masiyiwa through his Higher Life Foundation stepped in to rescue the situation last week by offering the doctors $5000 per month as well as other ‘perks’ which include mobile phones and free taxi rides for 6 months. President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government also gave the doctors who had been previously fired a 48-hour ultimatum to return to work unconditionally.

However, the doctors remain unmoved and argue that as long as their grievances are not being resolved, they will not accept a pittance from the authorities. The strike which has been on for close to 90 days now has worsened after the senior doctors also stopped going to work insisting that they would only do so after the government reverses its decision to fire more than 400 doctors.
