VP Chiwenga pours champagne on the floor instead of drinking it – Video. Acting President Constantino Chiwenga raised a few eyebrows on Monday when he seemingly refused to drink champagne and instead poured it onto the floor. This occurred after Chiwenga made a toast to the revival of struggling national airline Air Zimbabwe. However, after clinking his champagne glass with those of the other dignitaries at the event, Chiwenga chose not to partake and poured his drink onto the floor.
Ironically though, the other ministers officiating at the event, Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa and Transport minister Joel Biggie Matiza and senior executives from Air Zimbabwe all drank from their glasses.
This has raised speculation that perhaps Chiwenga is paranoid about getting poisoned and is now very careful about what he puts in his mouth. Chiwenga spent more than four months in China last year getting treated for an undisclosed ailment which he claimed would have certainly killed him if it was not for the intervention of the Chinese. There was speculation that Chiwenga may have got sick after being poisoned.
Poisoning seems to be a favoured way of dealing with political rivals in Zimbabwe’s political landscape. In 2017, (then) Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa was airlifted to South Africa from a political rally apparently after eating poisoned ice cream. Mnangagwa later confirmed that he had indeed been poisoned at the Zanu-PF rally in Gwanda.
Former Zanu-PF stalwart and Mnangagwa ally, the late Shuvai Mahofa was also allegedly poisoned at the Zanu PF annual conference held in Victoria Falls in December 2015. She was also airlifted to South Africa where she later recovered.
Last year, Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Energy Mutodi also claimed that the vanquished Generation- 40 (G40) Zanu-PF Faction was plotting to have senior party officials poisoned by their maids and other domestic workers. However, others have opined that perhaps the Vice President was making traditional rituals in which he was pouring the alcohol on the floor for his ancestors and dead comrades.
