Chinamasa: Naming and shaming corrupt people is against Zanu PF Policy. Zanu PF stalwart and former cabinet minister Patrick Chinamasa has sensationally claimed that it is against the ruling party’s policies to name and shame corrupt individuals. Chinamasa’s statement comes as the fallout from the shaming of alleged corrupt business people and cartel leaders by former Zanu PF Youth leaders continues.
Lewis Matutu and Godfrey Tsenengamu lost their positions as leaders of the youth league and are now facing expulsion from the party for shaming individuals associated with the president and his deputies. The two named businessmen Tafadzwa Musarara as well as energy tycoons Kuda Tagwirei and Billy Rautenbach as the people behind the suffering in the country.
However, Chinamasa who is the acting Zanu PF acting secretary for administration fired shots at the two claiming that naming and shaming creates an environment conducive for extortion. Instead, he said that people should approach the police and the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) if they have evidence of corruption.
The former finance minister is quoted by state media as saying. Naming and shaming that targets perceived successful business people be they black or white, breeds fertile ground for extortionists, rent-seeking behaviour and will have one outcome, that is haunting such people out of the country into exile which will not help this economy whose growth must be driven by local business people.
It is on the back of the local business people that foreign investors will invest in Zimbabwe and will feel that Zimbabwe is open for business. What this country needs for its economic success is entrepreneurship. If we can help to grow 10 or so Strive Masiyiwas in each of our 10 provinces we would be on the road to meeting our President’s Vision 2030 target of becoming an upper-middle-income country, whose growth must be driven by local business people.
If such leaders hold any personal views on politics and public affairs and such personal views differ from the Party’s position and policies, they can only express such contrary views at their homes. Otherwise, they are not justified to complain where consequences follow their actions. Cadres in leadership positions cannot articulate in public statements which are contrary to party policies and positions.
Matutu and Tsenengamu are yet to respond directly to Chinamasa’s latest statement. However, they have made it clear that they will be continuing with their anti-corruption crusade.
