Zimdancehall chanter sentenced to 14-years in prison for rape. Joseh Mutamba was convicted after a full trial by regional magistrate Hosea Mujaya. Prosecuting the case, George Makonore, proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Mutamba raped the complainant.
Top Zim Dancehall artiste Joseph ‘Chihomuhomu-Chigudo gudo’ Mutamba has been slapped with an effective sentence of 14 years in prison after he was found guilty of raping a 14-year-old girl who was a fellow tenant at his place of residence.
Makonore told the court that on an undisclosed date, the accused asked the minor to sweep in his room in exchange for money and she complied. After the complainant entered the room, Mutamba then locked the door and forced the minor to smoke marijuana with him at knifepoint. After that, Mutamba then undressed the complainant and raped her.
After the ordeal, Mutamba then shoved the complainant in his wardrobe after her mother knocked on his door quizzing him about his daughter’s whereabouts. However, the suspecting mother managed to search the house and found her daughter in the wardrobe.
The girl then confessed to her mother what had happened and her mother reported the matter to the police, leading to Mutamba’s arrest.
In his defence, Mutamba claimed that the complainant’s mother had fabricated everything since she wanted to trap him into marrying her daughter whom he alleged to be of loose morals.
Mutamba was sentenced to 18 years in prison and four were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years. In passing his judgement, Mujaya reprimanded Mutamba for being an artist who purported to advocate against child marriages and abuse but failed to uphold what he sang about.
