Police officers exposed and nabbed for being part of Mashurugwi gangs

Mashurugwi busted

Police officers exposed and nabbed for being part of Mashurugwi gangs. Ass Com Nyathi revealed this information during a media event by Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) Wednesday. “We have had arrests in Jumbo, Mazowe and Shamva of illegal artisanal miners. I admit we have arrested (police) officers at Jumbo, the law will take its course,” said Nyathi.

Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi has revealed that an undisclosed number of police officers are among 2 852 people who have been arrested for illegal artisanal gold mining or for being part of machete-wielding gangs now known as Mashurugwi.

“The Home Affairs Minister has said it before and I repeat – if there is a police officer who is involved in mining activities, they must stop because they will be arrested and eventually lose their jobs.”

A high number of police officers, correctional services officers and soldiers have been implicated in illegal gold mining activities in the country. Nyathi referred queries on whether they had also arrested any members of the military or Prison Service to respective spokespersons.

“I cannot comment on behalf of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) and Prisons, you will have to call them respectively.” This follows after last week the army stated that it is the Police’s job to deal with Mashurugwi and they would not intervene.

In view of the increasing media queries on ZDF deployments against machete-wielding gangs, the so-called “Mashurugwi”, members of the public should be made aware that it is purely the responsibility of the ZRP to deal decisively with the menace.

We are convinced that the ZRP will be equal to the task and bring all the culprits to book.
