Rwandan gospel singer and outspoken government critic mysteriously die in jail. Popular Rwandan gospel singer Kizito Mihigo mysteriously died in police custody on Monday. Authorities have since alleged that the now deceased committed suicide and have not revealed further details.
Mihigo, an outspoken critic of Rwandan President Paul Kagame was in police custody after having been arrested for allegedly attempting to illegally cross the border into Burundi to join terrorist groups working on overthrowing the government.
According to an official police statement on Monday, Mihigo killed himself, news that is likely going to be taken with a lot of scepticism. Mihigo was found guilty in 2015 of conspiracy to murder or harm the head of state and had been pardoned in 2018 until his recent arrest.
iHarare has learnt from the Guardian that the mysterious death of Mihigo is the latest in a series of deaths that have targeted opposition figures inside and outside Rwanda. However, no direct link has been established between the regime and the mysterious deaths and disappearances, although human rights organisations have repeatedly criticised the government for failing to investigate the suspected political murders.
Last week Rwanda Investigation Bureau revealed on their official account on microblogging site, Twitter, that the Catholic devotee had been captured whilst trying to escape the country into neighbouring Burundi where he was set to join insurgents fighting the Rwandan government.
“He has been in a cell for three days as police investigated why he was crossing the border illegally and cases of bribery,” John Bosco Kabera, a police spokesman, said.
Kabera did not respond to phone calls from Associated Press.
On 13/2/2020, Security organs handed over to #RIB Kizito Mihigo after being arrested in Nyaruguru District.
Mihigo’s criminal charges include attempt to illegally cross to Burundi, joining terrorist groups and corruption.
