Lesotho Prime Minister granted medical leave from murder case after fleeing the country

Thomas Thabane

Lesotho Prime Minister granted medical leave from murder case after fleeing the country. 80-year-old Thomas Thabane was due to appear in court on charges of murdering his former wife, Lilipelo Thabane. Embattled Lesotho Prime Minister who failed to appear in court on Friday after travelling to South Africa for alleged routine medical checkups, has been granted sick leave.

This comes after iHarare reported yesterday that the prime minister had been charged with murdering his ex-wife after police threatened to issue an arrest warrant if there was evidence that Thabane was trying to evade justice.

Deputy Police Commissioner Paseka Mokete told Reuters by telephone that Thabane had been granted sick leave until the 27th of February. New arrangements for him to appear before court shall be made as he has to be fit for an appearance. So there is no warrant of arrest issued as yet. His sick leave starts from yesterday and ends on 27 February.

This comes barely a month after Lesotho’s First Lady Maesaiah-who is also implicated in the murder case-fled the country to neighbouring South Africa in a desperate bid to evade arrest. She was later extradited. She has already been charged with ordering the killing but is currently out on bail.

Lipolelo, was killed outside her home in the capital Maseru two days before Thomas Thabane’s 2017 inauguration after being ambushed, shot several times at close range.

The couple were involved in bitter divorce proceedings at the time of her death. The attack was originally blamed on unknown assailants, but recent court papers filed by the country’s police commissioner, Holomo Molibeli, have raised further questions.
