In other news, political and diplomatic analysts have commended President Emmerson Mnangagwa for engaging other world leaders and following up on measures being implemented in the country to fight the spread of COVID-19.

Zimbabwe has to date nine confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus and registered one death. 340 suspected cases have tested negative. On Friday, President Mnangagwa attended a virtual meeting with fellow African leaders on the continent’s response to COVID-19 and this Sunday he toured Harare’s high-density suburbs to get an appreciation of people’s compliance to the national lockdown.

Despite the small number of confirmed cases, Zimbabwe is currently in a lockdown which started on the 30th of March and is expected to last 21 days in a move aimed at curbing the spread of the virus. The gestures by President Mnangagwa have since been commended in political and diplomatic circles, with Zimbabwe Institute of Diplomacy Executive Director, Vova Chikanda describing it as a sign of the President’s commitment to ensure safety of Zimbabweans.

Political analyst, James Makiya believes the wide consultations by the President is a reflection of the value he gives to his citizens. “This is the first time that we had this problem of this magnitude and we are happy that our President is making immeasurable efforts to fight this virus through wider consultations,” said Makiya.

A legislator, Honourable Priscillah Misihairabwi-Mushonga says the move by the President to tour residential areas shows that he is a listening President who is concerned about citizens.

“I am happy that the president has shown his leadership by visiting people in different residential areas. This is commendable. We also expect information centres to be established in all communities in order to get feedback from communities,” said Misihairabwi-Mushonga.
