Get to know South Africa-based model-cum-rapper Annastacia Yona. The songstress said being an artist takes a lot of things for one to get established and recognised. “In Zimbabwe, I was doing well but I wasn’t taken seriously that much because I am young and because of my genre.
South Africa based model-cum-rapper Annastacia Yona says it is not easy to be appreciated and accepted in a foreign land. “In 2019 I decided to move to South Africa because I wanted my music to be recognised globally and music here is a big deal. “But it’s difficult to be recognised quickly here but I am taken more seriously here than in Zimbabwe but for me to be a well-established artiste it’s really a tough journey to get airplay, TV play and PR team.
“Everything needs money and it is the biggest challenge for every artist from artworks, quality music and TV play. “The other part is being a foreigner, it’s really tough living in fear and we all know how risky it is to be a public person and in a foreign land,” she said.
The Chinhoyi bred artiste grew up in a family which encouraged music but not to pursue it. “When I was 15 years old I started doing auditions on national TV shows including Dreamstar Zimbabwe and I went as far as finals although didn’t make it to the finals.
“During that particular time I was already involved with Trevor Dongo and Cindy Munyavi who didn’t encourage Hip hop since it’s a genre which Zimbabweans think it’s a waste of time. “In 2017 I made my EP, Teenage Dream which was followed by a single called Kekupedzisira which gained popularity.
“I got the opportunity to be part of the Zim hip hop Awards and the experience which gave me an upper hand,” she added. Yona said she has shared the stage with the likes of Tamy Moyo, Ammara Brown, Jah signal, King 98 and Ti Gonzi.
“I have quite a few projects that I did and yes I have done music videos for my single Kekupedzisira. “Since I came to South Africa I have worked with Sean Ace and Gt beats on one of my new singles titled Make em dance which is already out,” she said.
The 20-year-old said she has signed with a modelling agency. “Since I am a model I have signed with FPA agency which is for TV and billboards. “I just found myself sitting in the Top 20 of Figure Finesse Models which is a runway modelling competition with the top five going to represent Africa in Europe in March 2021.”
