Heartbreak for Warriors defender Teenage Hadebe. A sad episode for Zimbabwean footballers in Europe continued at the weekend after Warriors defender Teenage Hadebe’s team, Yeni Malatyaspor, was relegated from the Turkish Super Lig on the last day of the season.
Malatyaspor, who went into the final match looking for an outright win to entertain hopes of surviving, suffered a 1-0 defeat to Gaziantep.
Hadebe’s team will play in the TFF 1 next season, the Turkish second-tier division. The former Chicken Inn man joins other Warriors stars like Macauley Bonne and Tendayi Darikwa who also suffered heartbreaks on the last day of the season.
Bonne’s Charlton Athletic was relegated into the League One – the third tier of English football – while Darikwa’s Nottingham Forest missed an opportunity for top-flight promotion playoffs.
This was Hadebe’s debut season in Turkey after joining Malatyaspor on a three-year deal from South African giants Kaizer Chiefs last season. Hadebe had decent first season in Turkey, playing 28 matches in all competitions, including a Europa League qualifying fixture.
The sad development is coming at a time Warriors coach Zdravko Logarusic recently told H-Metro the need to have more players in respected elite divisions. Logarusic highlighted that will help give players exposure and also open doors for youngsters in the country.
