NewsDay senior reporter arrested. This was revealed by Tabani Mpofu in a tweet on Saturday morning. Mpofu said Mhlanga is detained at Mabvuku Police Station in Harare. NewsDay senior reporter and HStv head news and current affairs Blessed Mhlanga has been arrested.

Journalist @bbmhlanga has been arrested. He is detained at Mabvuku Police Station @misazimbabwe has deployed lawyer Tafadzwa Mugabe to attend to the case… post earlier on Saturday before his arrest, Mhlanga called on social media users to ignore people who post “nonsense” on Twitter to make them irrelevant. Mhlanga said:

The biggest problem is you – yes you iwewe. Why do u give attention to people why say nonsense. You go to their TL’s in your 1 000’s to insult them. It makes them think they matter. Imbovasiya vaite zero comments, zero attention, tione do they keep writing statements.

This comes after Presidential Spokesperson George Charamba on Saturday made a veiled threat to the Trevor Ncube-owned Alpha Media Holdings (the company which owns NewsDay, Zimbabwe Independent, The Standard and HStv). Using the Twitter handle @Jamwanda2, Charamba said:

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN BROTHER TREVOR NCUBE’S STABLE??? Why are his structures veritable incubators for subversive media projects?? By ex-personnel, by current personnel and by way of abuse of his structures??? Is he unaware, aware and thus complicit??

I don’t think forces his ex-and current officers are converting with are that helpful to him and for his cause, standing! Just a thought!!! Mhlanga’s arrest comes a few days after the arrest of a freelance journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono for allegedly inciting public violence.
