Man crushed by a Lint machine to death. Mashonaland West Provincial Acting Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ian Kohwera told H-METRO that the unfortunate incident happened at Agri Value Chain Company which specialises in the ginning and manufacturing of cooking oil from cotton in Chegutu.

A Chegutu man died on spot after he was crushed by a lint machine at work. Ass Insp Kohwera said that the incident happened on September 15, at around 9:30am, when Cleopas Kwaramba (38) of house no 3043, ZMDC Chegutu, who was employed as a machine operator was using the machine to compress cotton lint into lint bales of about 200kgs.

He said that the now deceased was in the company of two other colleagues in the factory. “At 9:30, the machine developed a technical fault and immediately stopped at half-cocked position.

“As a safety precautionary measure, he turned off the machine to remove the cotton lint from the compressor box with half of his body into the box,” said Kohwera. He added:

“Suddenly, the machine resumed compressing thereby pressing Kwaramba’s body against the lint machine. “His colleagues tried to rescue him using chain blocks, but it was too late as he died upon arrival at Chegutu hospital.”

Ass Insp Kohwera told H-METRO that police were concerned about the spike in the number of occupational accidents at companies and mines, reiterating the need of observance of health and safety protocols.
