Popular social media influencer arrested for forgery. Gumbo was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare magistrate Barbra Mateko who released him on $2000 and ordered him to reside at the address he supplied to the police. Social media influencer Mitchel Gumbo was on Tuesday dragged to court charged for fraud and forgery involving ZWL$8 942.
Gumbo is employed by Zimbabwe Open University National Centre Harare as a stores clerk and the complainant is Zimbabwe Open University represented by Ngonidzashe Rupiya who is employed as a security officer.
Allegations are that between June and December 2019, Gumbo was employed as records clerk and was responsible for issuing consumable goods, filing of documents and distribution of mail in corporate services.
The court heard that in the exercise of his duties Gumbo received Stores Requisition forms from various departments and then issued consumable goods as per requisition and during that period, Gumbo reportedly altered figures on issue vouchers as well as issuing stationery without the approved store’s requisition forms contrary to the store’s procedures which prescribe that consumable items should be issued against approval from the requesting unit.
The case was discovered when the complainant made a routine stock take and investigations were conducted leading to the recovery of altered and increased figures on duplicate issue vouchers contrary to the actual quantity received by recipients.
Investigations also revealed that Gumbo at some point would collect bond papers from the stores room without the approval of the manager as shown on the issue vouchers, the court heard. Lancelot Mutsokoti appeared for the State.
