Econet abandons e-Learning bundle

Econet abandons e-Learning bundle. “Kindly note that we have ceased the facility of e-learning bundles with immediate effect,” read a notice from Econet Tuesday.

Telecoms giant, Econet Wireless has abandoned the e-Learning bundle facility, which was being utilised by private schools since lockdown, with immediate effect.

Amid sharp rises in other data bundle charges at a time most private institutions turned to online lessons on the closure of schools due to Covid-19, Econet introduced a special facility for them in May when the second term would have started.

Under the arrangement, only schools could apply and pay for their students and /or teachers. The schools ought to have at least 50 different mobile numbers to which they were sending the bundle.

There was no maximum number of ‘beneficiaries”. “Each school pays on behalf of its students/teachers/employees and collects money from parents or SDA’s. The school provides mobile phone numbers to be credited with the data bundles to Econet. So Econet only deals with the schools. However, other options may also be considered,” said Econet then.

Initially when the promotion started mid-May, 10GB valid for 30 days went for $220 while 20GB cost $380 and prices were retained until July. A review was done mid-July and Econet suspended the 20GB package while 10GB now cost $420 before rising to $580 in mid-August until the abandonment of promotion Tuesday.

Econet reviewed their data bundle charges from August 31 but remain the cheapest option. Private schools have continued with online lessons and some are already in Third Term while the government on Tuesday announced a roadmap where exam classes resume on September 14 (Cambridge) and September 28 (Zimsec).
