Another false start to businessman Wicknel Chivayo trial. The duo appeared before Harare regional magistrate Ngoni Nduna. Kazhanje made an application for postponement on the basis that his lead counsel Advocate Sylvester Hashiti was no longer able to represent him.

The trial for businessman Wicknell Chivayo, who is accused of bribing the former Zimbabwe Power Company chairman Stanley Kazhanje, failed to kick off once again.

Kazhanje’s instructing lawyer Garikai Mhishi said, “Instructions are to apply for a postponement because Advocate of choice Advocate Hashiti is not in attendance and he’s not able to attend.

“We aren’t able to reveal the reasons why he can no longer attend in an open court, please allow us to furnish the reasons to the court in chambers. We have also been given instructions to brief the new advocate.”

In response, Special Anti-Corruption Unit prosecutor Brian Vito conceded to have the reasons revealed in chambers. Afterwards, court took a brief adjournment, and when they returned the matter was remanded further by consent, to 18-20 January 2020.

The State alleges that on October 22, 2015, the ZPC board held a meeting where Kazhanje allegedly directed management to proceed in signing a contract with Intratrek Zimbabwe.

It is further alleged that the following day, a contract was signed between ZPC and Intratrek Zimbabwe. Chivayo, on January 21, 2016 allegedly transferred $10 000 from Intratrek Zimbabwe’s bank account into Kazhanje’s personal Barclays Bank account.

It is claimed that after the payment of $10 000, Kazhanje later influenced the ZPC board to pass resolutions in favour of the accused in connection with the ZPC contract.
