Govt starts repossessing farms that are not being used today. The exercise will also see those with multiple farms losing their farms under the one man one farm policy and they will be allocated to those on the waiting list.

The government will, starting today, commence the process of repossessing idle, underutilised, vacant, and or abandoned farms in a bid to redistribute them in order to boost productivity and ensure food security, the Chronicle reports.

This was revealed by the Agriculture Minister Dr Anxios Masuku during the Zunde raMambo/ Isiphala se Nkosi program at Chief Mapanzure’s homestead in Zvishavane over the weekend when he said:

The government will from Monday start the exercise of repossessing land from multiple farm owners, those who have abandoned the land and those who are underutilising the land. The repossessed land will be allocated to the landless as we push to achieve the agricultural revolution aimed at making the country food secure,

Productive farms will be exempt, we will not downsize or repossess productive farms. We are being guided by Statutory Instrument 41 of 2020.

We are aware that some individuals allocated farms do not have adequate resources to fully utilise the land hence this decision to allow joint ventures. We are saying if you can find partners to go into joint venture, that is a good route but you must get authorisation from the ministry. No joint venture without Government approval will be entertained

The report comes a few short days after MDC Vice President Tendai Biti said white commercial farmers are returning to their farms quietly.
