MDC-T considering an online Congress

MDC-T considering an online Congress. About 4000 delegates are expected to attend the congress scheduled to take place between December 12 and 20 this year. Opposition MDC-T interim leadership is considering holding the Supreme Court-sanctioned Extraordinary congress online due to the coronavirus.

The congress is meant to elect the substantive successor to the party’s founding leader, the late former Prime Minister, Morgan Tsvangirai.

The party’s interim Secretary-General, Senator Douglas Mwonzora, confirmed the report adding that a virtual meeting was a possibility. He said: It is an option that we are considering. However, there are other options, including decentralisation of congress.

The congress is premised at bringing to an end the prolonged leadership crisis that has caused divisions in the biggest opposition party in the country.

The party’s national council last week held a virtual meeting which nominated four presidential candidates, the interim leader, Thokozani Khupe, Mwonzora, acting chair Morgen Komichi and Elias Mudzuri.
