Kadoma mine accidents claim 2. The first incident occurred in Chakari around 6am on Sunday. Two people died in separate accidents that occurred at Maldon mine in Chakari and Zimplats Mine in Mhondoro-Ngezi.

Reports say two houses sagged into the ground they were built on resulting in one death while other occupants of the houses got trapped. Chakari Ward 3 councillor Naison Tinapi said:

“The houses sank into the ground this morning (Sunday). One person died and the others were trapped. “There is a person who was sleeping in one of the rooms and collapsed in that state.

“The houses should have been built on top of disused or refilled mine shafts.” An eye witness said he arrived at the scene after the accident had just occurred. “I arrived here around 6 am to find the houses sinking into the ground. I could not believe my eyes. One person sank while sleeping.”

Another resident of the area said they arrived at the scene to hear a voice calling for help from one of the victims. She said they tried to help the person in any way they could.

Meanwhile, an entrance to Zimplats’ Ngwarati Mineshaft also collapsed late Sunday afternoon claiming one life. Zimplats head corporate affairs Busi Chindove confirmed the unfortunate incident.

“One of our contract employees succumbed to injuries sustained just before 10am yesterday when a high wall at Ngwarati mine shaft box-cut in Mhondoro-Ngezi collapsed. “We’re saddened by this incident. As Zimplats we remain committed to providing a safe working environment for all our employees,” she said.
