ZRP: Intensified lockdown. Police clear town of people. Stricter scrutiny of letters. Police would be seen inquiring from motorists in parking bays and everyone who was found walking in the CBD of their purpose in the town and failure to produced required documents were taken to Harare Central Police Station for further inquiry.
Several people were on Monday rounded up by police in Harare the central business district (CBD) for failing to produce exemption letters under national lockdown Level 4 measures while the CBD was cleared of people making unnecessary movements by midday.
Among questionable letters produced by people showed places of their business operations and failed to justify their business in CBD while others indicated places of business which were out of Harare.
Some letters were not signed by authorised people posing a suggestion that some of the letters were from dubious authorities. National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the move was part of intensifying national lockdown measures set by the government to curb further spread of Covid-19.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has intensified lockdown measures following the increasing number of people being arrested for unnecessary movement across the country,” said Ass Comm Nyathi. “Police are urging members of the public in all parts of the country to observe lockdown measures,” he said.
Police intensified their patrols in most suburbs and a number of people were nabbed at bottle stores, shopping centres and home industries. On Sunday, Ass Comm Nyathi said, a total of 2615 people were arrested countrywide and among them 1535 for unnecessary movements, 633 for failure to put on face masks, 224 for miscellaneous offences, 124 for traffic-related offences and 32 for opening businesses without necessary exemption documents.
