Zimbabwe introduces out new contraceptive

Sayana Press

Zimbabwe introduces out new contraceptive. The new contraceptive, which is manufactured in Belgium, is an injection that should be administered every 13 weeks. The Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) has introduced a new contraceptive called Sayana Press.

Unlike, Depo-Provera which must be injected by a health care provider, Sayana Press can be self-administered at home.

The other difference between the two injections is that Depo-Provera is injected into a muscle, usually in the buttocks or in the arm, while Sayana Press is injected beneath the skin at the front of the thigh or abdomen.

ZNFPC executive director Dr Munyaradzi Murwira said the rollout has since begun. He said: It is safe and has been approved by the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ). It is currently registered and approved by regulatory authorities in more than 50 countries worldwide, including in Europe and the USA.
