Rape: 4 things you immediately need to do.

1. What to do if someone you know has been raped
  • Believe what they are saying and support them. Do not panic
  • Do not ask too many detail questions. You may hurt then’ more in the process
  • Do not share this information with anyone without their consent. Confidentiality is key.
  • Affirm their feelings and express admiration for their courage to share their issue with you
  • Refer them for professional services
2. What to do if you have been raped
  • Tell someone you know and trust
  • Rush to your nearest hospital or clinic within 3 days (#72hours) for the following free services:
    • Voluntary HIV test and medicines to prevent HIV infection
    • Medicines to prevent and treat sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
    • Medicines to prevent pregnancy
    • Medical examination and collection of forensic evidence for court processes

Take Note: Rape is a painful and traumatic experience. Counseling is offered at the clinic to prevent long-term mental health problems.

3. What to avoid if you have been raped
  • Bathing
  • Washing or throwing away clothes you were wearing when it occurred
  • Staying at home and trying to forget about it
4. Where to get Help
  • You can get free post-rape services at ARC Ward C9 Parirenyatwa Hospital
  • The clinic offers free services necessary after being raped and opens from 08-00 hours — 1630 hours (Monday-Friday)
  • During weekends, public holidays and after hours, services are available in the Casualty Department of Parirenyatwa and Harare Hospitals
  • Visit any health facility near you to get other sexual and reproductive health services you may need
