Beer consumption increasesDelta. This is despite the Covid-19 lockdown measures imposed on the country since the beginning of the year. Beverages has revealed that Zimbabwe’s beer consumption went up by 57 percent between January and September compared to the same period last year.

In a statement released yesterday, Delta, the country’s biggest brewer and beverage manufacturer said sales volumes were up across all its products in the six months to September.

“Zimbabweans drank 57% more beer than they did over the same period last year and this was due improved product supply benefitting from the ongoing glass injection that encourages better glass circulation,” Delta said.

“The increase in the beer consumption by Zimbabwean was also due competitive and affordable pricing and increased social activities that drive consumption post hard lockdown.”

Delta also indicated that sorghum beer consumption rose to 68 percent compared to the same period last year. “There was increased spending in rural markets driven by artisanal mining and improved agricultural output which contributed to the increase in sorghum beer consumptions,” said Delta.

“Also volume growth benefited from relaxed Covid-19 trading conditions and the opening of on premise outlets benefitting the Scud pack which has increased its contribution.” “There are also efforts to unlock additional production capacity for Chibuku Super.”

In its statement, Delta also revealed that volumes for soft drinks went up to 95 percent compared to the same period last year. “Volume growth for sparkling drinks was due to ongoing initiatives to address affordability, leveraging the returnable glass pack and consistent full product supply,” he said.

“Also increased contribution of immediate consumption offerings driven by affordable glass packs and improved flavour range gave wider choice to consumers’ further drove volume.”

The also indicated that PET packs supply remains an opportunity to be addressed going forward.

Delta said the increase in the consumption of wines and spirits to 66 percent was because improved product availability due to increased local production, extended distribution reach to cover general trade and evidence of cheap and illicit spirits in the market.
