Harare City Council rehabilitates Africa Unit Square. Chief Parks and Cemeteries Officer Godfrey Batsirai Munetsi told H-Metro that borehole water and two water fountains are already operational.

City of Harare has started a rehabilitation project, which they believe will bring back glitter in Africa Unit Square.

“We have started a rehabilitation program at Africa Unit Square and other recreational facilities around Harare,” said Munetsi. “We are removing all ageing trees that include Jacaranda and Cyprus trees and replacing them with Cassia trees.

“Cassia tree leaves turn yellow and that will see a new look and blooming Africa Unit Square.

“We have already worked on supplying clean water, repaired two water fountains as well as lighting so that there is no more darkness in Africa Unity Square during the night.

“Some ageing trees have been damaging properties that include vehicles and posing threat to people’s lives.

“The rehabilitation projects will see a new sunshine City of Harare,” said Munetsi. Meanwhile, on their social media handles Harare City said they are partnering Meikles Hotel in the rehabilitation of Africa Unity Square.

“Council is cutting down old trees that pose danger to life in Africa Unity Square as part of the park renewal efforts. Residents have previously urged council to renew the park by planting new trees and manicure its surroundings.

“Council will soon renew the water fountains and beef up park security during day and night.

The park borehole will be replaced to ensure watering the park is continuous. Council is partnering Meikles Hotel in the project.

“Businesses around the park have previously committed to assist in maintaining the ambience of the park as part of their corporate social responsibility programme. Only Meikles Hotel has lived to the promise.”
