AFCON Finals: Musona and Mahachi scored as Warriors beat Guinea 2 – 1

AFCON Finals: Musona and Mahachi scored as Warriors beat Guinea 2 – 1. It was too little too late for the Warriors as their AFCON exit was confirmed despite beating Guinea 2-1, courtesy of goals from Musona and Mahachi. Hopes of salvaging the best loser slot were dashed by Malawi earning a point against Senegal in the other group match.

Zimbabwe held on for the win after an early second-half goal by Keita gave Guinea the impetus. Musona and Mahachi had given Zimbabwe a commanding first-half lead. The Warriors now head home, their campaign damaged by defeats to Senegal and Malawi.

The West Africans finished second in the table, ahead of Malawi on head-to-head record after the Flames drew 0-0 with Senegal. Guinea reached the last 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations despite losing their final Group B match 2-1 against already-eliminated Zimbabwe.

Knowledge Musona’s downward header and Kudakwashe Mahachi’s low strike put Zimbabwe two up at half-time. Naby Keita replied with a stunning goal for Guinea in a low-key encounter.

The match in Yaounde saw Rwanda’s Salima Mukansanga make history by becoming the first woman to referee a Nations Cup game.
