Zim dancehall star Emergy Sylvester Chizanga, popularly known as Freeman, says the emergence of new stars in the music industry has brought a different kind of energy, pushing seasoned artists to produce better quality music. Also known as the HKD Boss, Freeman told NewsDay Life & Style that music standards have improved expectations from fans are high and artists have to keep up with the changing times.

“The rise of new stars is good for the fans and artistes to keep pushing for better quality. Times have changed and artists have to keep up with the times as music has evolved to better standards,” he said.

“For my new compositions, I get inspired mostly by life experiences and the ability to observe what would be happening in society. Also, challenges I would have gone through or experiences of different subject matter inspire my creativity when making new music.”

The multi-award-winning singer said Pasi Harigute, his 2017 production, was one of his many songs inspired by life experiences.

“The song (Pasi Harigute) was inspired by the death of my childhood friend. It hit me hard and I needed to vent,” he explained.

A fortnight ago, Freeman added the Trophy album to his rich discography. The 13-track album features songs such as the title track Trophy, Kumba Ndinodzoka, Tsiva, Nadha, Bhanan’ana, and Mutaka.

To date, Freeman has released 10 albums and has collaborated with an array of artists across genres both local and international, among them Jamaican dancehall artist Christopher Martin on the track Zimbabwean Queen.
