Walter Magaya, owner of Yadah Football Club and founder of Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries, has expressed frustration with bureaucratic hurdles from local authorities hindering his efforts to develop sports facilities in Zimbabwe. His recent achievements include inaugurating the first phase of the Heart Stadium in Waterfalls, Harare, a project set to accommodate 20,000 spectators once completed. This initiative was recognized by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Magaya has extended his vision beyond Zimbabwe, unveiling a similar project named Heart Stadium 2 in Maputo, Mozambique, which also holds potential for hosting international matches. In a further expansion of his football development endeavors, he has announced plans for Heart Stadium 3 in Lilongwe, Malawi, marking a groundbreaking ceremony at Chipala Community Ground.
Despite these ambitions, Magaya lamented the slow progress in refurbishing Chibuku Stadium in Chitungwiza and Gwanzura Stadium in Highfield to meet international standards, attributing delays to administrative bottlenecks with Chitungwiza and Harare City councils, respectively. He emphasized his commitment to providing opportunities for youth football development through adequate facilities, stressing the necessity of conducive conditions for such investments both domestically and regionally.
Responding to inquiries about his international projects amid domestic stadium challenges, Magaya clarified that he was approached by Malawi officials to undertake the Lilongwe stadium initiative, highlighting the more efficient bureaucratic process there compared to Zimbabwe. Despite setbacks, he remains determined to improve local sporting infrastructure and expressed hope for future cooperation from Zimbabwean authorities.
Magaya’s contributions to football extend beyond infrastructure development, with involvement in talent management and support for the sport at various levels over the years. His upcoming initiatives include hosting the inaugural Magaya Sports Tournament at Yadah Complex, featuring football and netball competitions aimed at nurturing local talent.
While speculation surrounds his potential candidacy for the Zifa presidency, Magaya maintained focus on his current initiatives, emphasizing his longstanding dedication to football development and his contributions to the sport’s growth in Zimbabwe.
