A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to raise £8,000 for the repatriation of Rise Kagona, the founding member of the iconic Zimbabwean band, the Bhundu Boys, who passed away in Scotland last Saturday at the age of 62. Kagona was the last remaining original member of the band, known for its immense influence in the music scene.
According to a post on the group’s Facebook page, Kagona had been suffering from persistent cough and shortness of breath for several months. Andy Cooke, who is organizing the fundraiser, shared, “Rise touched so many people through his songs during his time in Scotland, but it was always his wish to return home. Let’s help Rise finally get home to be buried so that his children can say goodbye to their wonderful dad.”
The funds raised will cover the costs of his repatriation, as friends and community members have assured his family that they would help in this final act of appreciation for his contributions to music. The Bhundu Boys, arguably the most successful band to emerge from Zimbabwe, dominated the charts in the 1980s and 1990s. They were the first African band to tour extensively around the world, including opening for Madonna and signing with Warner Bros. Records. Despite their success, the band faced challenges, including exploitation by management and the impact of HIV/AIDS on its members, leading to the group’s split in 1994.
Kagona’s legacy is remembered fondly by his former bandmates and the music community in the UK. Colleagues expressed their sorrow, stating, “He will be missed by so many—his fellow Bhundu Boys, musicians who learned from him, his friends in the community, and the millions who enjoyed his music.”
Reports indicate that Kagona’s recent health issues were linked to high blood pressure and a damaged heart. He spent a week in the hospital and returned home on the 12th feeling somewhat better. Sadly, a visit from a friend on Saturday revealed he had passed away, likely due to a sudden heart attack. As the community mourns his loss, the GoFundMe campaign stands as a testament to the impact Rise Kagona had on many lives through his music and friendships.
