The mischief-maker used the address for the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ), 80 Samora Machel, as well as the phone number of RBZ governor John Mangudya. In a rather funny development, a mischievous social media user created a banner for the “People’s Wholesale & Retail Mart” which has ultra cheap prices and started spreading the banner in social media groups.
As a result of the prank, the RBZ was forced to issue a statement dismissing the “People’s Shops”, perhaps partly because the governor’s phone was inundated with phone calls. Ironically, the government is working on launching its own People’s Shops in an apparent effort to protect the poor from businesses which the government accuses of profiteering and economic sabotage.
Below is the statement from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe would like to advise members of the public that the message currently circulating on social media purporting that there is a People’s Wholesale and Retail market at 80 Samora Machel Avenue, is fake and misleading.
80 Samora Machel Avenue is the Headquarters of the Reserve Bank Of Zimbabwe.
The RBZ wishes to take this opportunity to advise the public to disregard the fake message as it creates unnecessary anxiety to unsuspecting members of the public. This is unwarranted cyber abuse of social media.
