Tanzania stands ready to support the Zimbabwean government and President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s trajectory on economic issues which will bring prosperity if they are followed through.
This was said by outgoing Tanzanian ambassador to Zimbabwe Retired Lieutenant General Charles Makakala when he paid a courtesy call on President Mnangagwa this morning, to bid him farewell after serving a three year tour of duty.
Tanzania and Zimbabwe, through Chama Cha Mapinduzi and Zanu PF, have historical ties from the time of the Second Chimurenga when the east African country offered moral, technical and material support to the country’s liberation movements.
Because of the strong ties that exist between Harare and Dodoma, Tanzania became one of the countries that President Mnangagwa visited when he ascended to power.
Speaking to journalists after holding a closed door meeting with the president, Ambassador Makakala said the east African nation is happy with President Mnangagwa’s thrust and his Tanzanian counterpart President John Magufuli has pledged his full support to ensure that Zimbabwe realises its potential.
“Conveyed a message from President Magufuli expressing support to Zimbabwe which is going through some economic challenges; and appreciating the efforts by the new government to revamp the economy to bring prosperity to Zimbabwe. President Magufuli has expressed willingness to reciprocate ED’s visit and will be coming to Harare,” said Ambassador Makakala.
President Mnangagwa went on a two-day state visit to Tanzania in June this year and President Magufuli will be reciprocating the visit at dates to be advised, according to Ambassador Makakala, who also revealed the two SADC countries are organising a permanent commission of cooperation with the draft agenda already in place.
“Zimbabwe has been going through challenges and needs time. We are planning to hold a permanent commission of cooperation and the draft agenda is already in place,” he added.
Ambassador Retired Lieutenant General Makakala said the visit by President Mnangagwa to Tanzania opened up a new horizon for Zimbabwe-Tanzania relations in all spheres.
Ambassador Makakala’s posting to Zimbabwe in 2015 was his first tour of duty as a diplomat.
