HOT 1027 FM radio personality Mark Pilgrim passed away at 53 after losing his battle with cancer on Sunday, 5 March. Here’s what you should know about the father of two and former Big Brother Africa TV host.

According to HOT1027 FM, the veteran radio DJ Mark Pilgrim died at home with his family. “DJ Mark Pilgrim lost his battle with cancer this morning. He fought valiantly to the very end. Mark passed peacefully with his fiancée Adrienne at home.

Lloyd Madurai, managing director at HOT 102.7FM said in an online statement: “It was with great sadness that I share this news.”

“Our hero and brother and much loved radio personality Mark Pilgrim lost his battle with cancer this morning at 10:45,” Madurai said in a Facebook post published an hour later.

“He fought valiantly to the very end. Mark passed peacefully with his fiancé Adrienne at home. They were together for his last breath.

“The family thank you for being part of his journey. For loving him and for celebrating him and supporting him always. Mark will be greatly missed by all. May his soul rest in peace.”

WHERE WAS MARK BORN?
According to MarkPilgrim.co.za, the media personality was born in Kent, England in a small village called Allhallows.

He came to South Africa at the age of 9 and knew he wanted to be a radio DJ when he grew up. The website adds that Pilgrim used to ride around the streets of Kriel with a battery-operated microphone and speaker when he was 12 years and used to announce lost dogs, which wasn’t true.

Pilgrim’s father and brothers reportedly still live in the UK!

PILGRIM: CAREER
The award-winning TV and radio personality Mark Pilgrim was known for hosting radio shows on HOT 1027, 5FM, 94.7 Highveld Stereo, 94.5 Kfm, and Hot919.

Pilgrim also hosted reality TV shows such as Big Brother South Africa, Big Brother Africa, and the game show Power of 10

FIGHTING CANCER

Pilgrim was first diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1988 and was declared in remission after surgery and months-long chemotherapy.

The star revealed at the beginning of 2022 that his cancer had returned and was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, which he later revealed had spread to his femur, the base of his spine, and lymph nodes.

HE LEAVES BEHIND TWO DAUGHTERS

The South African-based DJ has two daughters Tayla-Jean and Alyssa with his ex-wife of 13 years Nicole Torres.

Pilgrim was engaged to a woman named Adrienne Watkins at the time of his death.
