How Unathi Nkayi got to a point of demanding R1.6 million from Kaya 959

Amid the saga of Unathi Nkayi suing Kaya 959 for R1.6m for “unlawful” termination of contract, social media users have attempted to justify and break down the funds she is demanding.

In November 2021, the media personality was fired from the radio station after her dispute with TV and radio presenter Sizwe Dhlomo, who she accused of verbal abuse and unprofessional conduct.

Unathi’s legal representative David Feinberg confirmed to the publication she has issued a high court summons against Kaya 959.

Unathi declined to comment.

According to the summons seen by the publication, Unathi was paid R60,000 a month from March 1 2020 to June 30 2020.

From July 1 2020 to June 30 2021, she was paid R65,000 monthly.

However, her weekly shifts were increased and her salary went up to R81,250 a month from April 1 2021.

Her legal representatives said she suffered contractual damages of R1.3m because, had the contract stayed in place, Kaya would have paid her salary for another 16 months.

Unathi has been candid about how she was affected by the saga and how she lost gigs, and believes Kaya ought to fork out for them.

In November 2021, Unathi was dropped as host of the GQ Men of the Year awards. GQ magazine had offered to pay her R30,000 but withdrew from the arrangement.

KFC, which had offered to pay Unathi R70,000, also withdrew from their arrangement.

The summons reflects that Unathi is suing Kaya 959 for R1.3m for contractual damages, R100,000 for delictual damages and R200,000 for the infringement of her right to dignity, which totals R1.6m.
