ZACC challenges public and private institutions to establish integrity committees

THE Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has challenged public and private institutions to establish integrity committees for monitoring office bearers.

Speaking on the sidelines of a training workshop with Rural District Councils in Masvingo recently, ZACC Commissioner, Mr Gabriel Chaibva said they have embarked on a national exercise to ensure public institutions form integrity committees as part of efforts to fight corruption.

“As part of our mandate we embark on exercises that seek to prevent corruption. The concept of integrity committees is intended to establish specialized committees within institutions that will assist in monitoring and reporting acts of malfeasance before actual corruption happens. So we are urging the public and private institutions to have these integrity committees,” said Chaibva.

Rural District Councils are convinced that the training programme is a vital tool for promoting a culture of accountability.

“The fight against corruption in this country is the responsibility of everybody and the concept of identifying and avoiding corruption at the grassroots level again is the responsibility of everyone hence we are here today,” said an accounting officer who spoke to ZBC News.

“These integrity committees are very important for us as local authorities as they will help even us accounting officers to fight corruption. ZACC cannot fight corruption on its own without support from these public institutions,” said another.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is taking the lead in the fight against corruption stressing that it has no place in the second republic, as the country journeys towards an upper middle-income society by 2030.
