Actor Julian Sands found dead after going missing on hike in January

Julian Sands, an actor best known for his breakout role as George Emerson in “A Room with a View,” has sadly been confirmed dead. He was 65. The coroner’s office said the British actor’s remains were found by hikers last week in the wilderness area where he went missing in January.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in an update Tuesday that the identification process for the body had been “completed and was positively identified” as Sands.

“The manner of death is still under investigation, pending further test results,” they added.

Sands is survived by his wife, Eugenia Citkowitz, and their daughters Imogen Morley, 26, and Natalya Morley, 23. He also shared 37-year-old son Henry with his ex-wife, Sarah Sands. Sands was first reported missing on Jan. 13 when he didn’t return from a hiking trip in the San Gabriel Mountains in Mt. Baldy, about 45 miles east of Los Angeles. The search for the actor was suspended due to inclement weather. However, 80 volunteers and officials resumed looking for him on June 17.

“Despite the recent warmer weather, portions of the mountain remain inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions. Multiple areas include steep terrain and ravines, which still have 10-plus feet of ice and snow,” the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office said earlier this month.

Sands’ family also spoke out for the first time since his disappearance at the time, thanking volunteers for their ongoing search and rescue efforts.

“We are deeply grateful to the search teams and coordinators who have worked tirelessly to find Julian,” the family’s statement said.

“We continue to hold Julian in our hearts, with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer.”

Sands, who was an experienced hiker, starred in films like “Arachnophobia,” “Warlock” and “Leaving Las Vegas.” The area he was climbing is considered one of the most dangerous peaks to traverse in California. Around the time he went missing, the sheriff’s department warned hikers that the conditions on Mount Baldy were “adverse and extremely dangerous.”

“Due to the severe weather and alpine conditions, the search has been difficult and the use of air resources was limited over the weekend,” the department told KTLA in January.

The department also shared via Facebook that its search and rescue crews had “responded to 14 rescue missions” for “lost, stranded and/or injured hikers” over the holiday period in December 2022 and January this year. Multiple hikers died as a result of the conditions.
