Kwaito star Zola 7 to release his documentary

Mzansi Kwaito musician, actor, writer, TV presenter, and poet, Zola 7, has left an indelible mark in the South African music industry and he is humbled that he gets to share his journey through a documentary.

On Sunday, 20 August, SABC1 will broadcast his doccie titled Zola: uMdlwembe which will dive deep into his debut album of the same name.

In the 48-minute-long doccie, Zola will break down some of his most iconic songs and share some never-heard-before stories about those fan favorites and how they came about.

Speaking to Zimoja, he said: “Not many people get the opportunity to narrate and share their journey while they are still alive.”

Zola told the publication that a documentary has always been his dream.

“These are all the things I prayed for and wanted, which happened in front of my eyes. It was an absolutely amazing time for me. I come from a township where we are told that things like these will probably never happen, and we became the generation that proved that anything is possible,” the Don’t Cry hitmaker said.

The kwaito legend’s uMdlwembe album came at the height of his career when he was in the South African television phenomenon, Yizo Yizo.

The documentary will feature his riends Maggz, Kaybee, Proverb, Towdee Mac, Ph Raw, Ms. Supa, C-live, Rashid Kay, Amu, and many others.

In 2021, Zola candidly spoke about battling epilepsy. The Stars hitmaker told MacG on Podcast and Chill that he started suffering from. The illness in 2018 and now takes daily medications to get by.

Zola admitted that he has lost a significant amount of weight due to the illness. He also told Zimoja in March 2023 that he had been in a coma for five weeks.

“I could say that I rose from the dead. I almost didn’t make it. I almost kicked the bucket,” he said about his battle with the disease.
