Bill Gates opens up about how being a grandparent motivates him

To mark Grandparent’s Day on Sunday, the Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist shared a photograph of himself reading Jean Reagan’s How to Babysit a Grandpa to his granddaughter Leila, as she sat in his daughter Jennifer Gates’ arms.

In the caption to his post, Gates reflected on what grandfatherhood has taught him.
“Becoming a grandparent has given me a whole new lens to see the world through,” said Gates, 67. “It keeps me motivated to ensure my granddaughter — and all our grandchildren — inherit a better world than they were born into.”
He added “Grandparents Day” in hashtag.

Jennifer, 27, is Bill and wife Melinda French Gates’ eldest child. The former pair, who divorced in 2021 after 27 years of marriage, are also parents to son Rory, 24, and daughter Phoebe, 20.

eila’s arrival was announced in a joint Instagram post between Jennifer and her husband Nayel Nassar on March 5. “Sending love from our healthy little family 💓🙏🥰,” the pair captioned the post, which showed them holding their baby girl, with the focus on her tiny feet.

Weeks later, in April, Melinda shared an image of herself alongside the newborn.

“There is nothing quite like holding your first grandchild,” Melinda, 59, captioned the snap. She added, “It seems like just yesterday I was holding Jenn at this age.”

Bill and Melinda wed in January 1994 and announced their intention to divorce via a joint statement on Twitter in May 2021. “After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” their statement read.

“Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives,” they added, referring to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which they founded in 2000.

The former couple were by one another’s side again this May when they both celebrated Jennifer’s graduation from Columbia University with a master’s degree in public health. Jennifer shared pictures of herself in a pale pink cap and gown alongside her husband and proud parents to mark the happy occasion.

She accompanied the image with the caption: “(Accelerated) Master of Public Health. Thank you @columbiapublichealth for this incredible educational opportunity and the village around me who made this possible. Grateful 🙏✨.”
