On Monday, in an interview with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Tesla CEO said the online platform formerly known as Twitter will charge users a monthly fee.
The prime minister asked about online anti-Semitism and how X could “prevent the use of bots – armies of bots – to replicate and amplify it”.
Elon responded with the solution of a monthly subscription.
“It’s the only way I can think of to combat vast armies of bots,” he said. “Because a bot costs a fraction of a penny – call it a tenth of a penny – but if somebody even has to pay a few dollars, some minor amount, the effective cost of bots is very high.”
“And then you also have to get a new payment method every time you have a new bot.”
Meanwhile, X charges users who are verified an $8 monthly fee, which includes the verified check and access to special features, like the ability to edit posts. For organizations, a verified subscription on X is $1,000 a month, with an extra $50 a month for each additional affiliate.
