Afro-pop group, Malaika makes a come back

The award-winning Afro-pop group known for their hit song “Destiny”, Malaika is set to make a highly anticipated comeback. The group had previously split up around 2015 due to conflicts between female singer Tshedi Mholo and Bongani Nchang, who could no longer work harmoniously together. The tensions between them had become public, revealing their inability to stand each other’s presence.

Originally starting as a trio, Malaika faced a tragic loss when their fellow member Jabu passed away after a prolonged illness. All the Malaika members hail from the North West province of South Africa, with Bongani and Jabu originating from Potchefstroom and Tshedi from Lichtenburg. Their long-time producer, Godfrey “Guffy” Pilane, who also hails from the North West, specifically Rustenburg, has been an integral part of their journey.

Tshedi has given her blessings to Bongani to use the Malaika brand name since they are no longer working together. Despite their separation, the group remains signed with Sony Music and owes the label one album, as part of their four-album deal.

Bongani has already enlisted the services of Tsoakae, a talented female singer, and the group has commenced performing at various gigs under the name Malaika. In addition, they have begun recording their upcoming album, which will be co-produced by Bongani and Guffy. However, news of Malaika’s comeback has been kept tightly under wraps.

Tshedi, an active member of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has made the transition easier for Bongani by formally resigning from Malaika and providing him with her blessings to use the band name. Notably, Tshedi recently performed at the EFF’s 10th birthday party, held at the FNB Stadium on July 29, showcasing her involvement in political and social spheres.

When contacted for comment, Bongani Chang expressed his excitement and enthusiasm, stating that he is over the moon and eagerly looking forward to rocking their fans once again. While he refrained from revealing too much at this moment, he assured fans to expect something incredible from Malaika’s comeback.
