Carla Bruni has revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago. The model and singer, 55, shared the news in a video posted to Instagram Wednesday to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
In the video, Bruni used sign cards to reveal her diagnosis and shared a statement in both French and English.
“I was diagnosed with breast cancer 4 years ago,” the statement began. “Surgery, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, I went through the usual treatment for this type of cancer.”
Bruni went on to share that she was “lucky” as her cancer was found when it was “not yet aggressive.”
“Why wasn’t it aggressive? Because it didn’t have time to become aggressive,” she said. “Every year, on the same date, I do a mammogram. If I hadn’t done one every year, I wouldn’t have a left breast today.”
Adding that she “hesitated for a long time before talking about this,” Bruni then urged her followers to undergo regular breast cancer screenings.
“I’m not writing this post to give you the details of my health. That’s repugnant to me,” she continued. “The reason I’m posting this today is to deliver a message. But a fundamental message for all the women who will read this: Do your mammograms every year. Do your mammograms. Your lives depend on it.”
The Instagram post was captioned with the hashtag, “#octobrerose,” which translates to “Pink October” for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Bruni is married to former French president Nicolas Sarkozy. The couple tied the knot in 2018 and share one child together: Daughter Giulia, who turns 12 next week.
In an interview with U.K. newspaper The Sunday Times last year, Bruni gushed over her 68-year-old husband and his caring nature.
“He is super alpha, directing everything, taking control of everything,” she told the publication.
“That’s why he became the president because he has this temperament. But he doesn’t need a country, he does it anyway. He’s also the gentlest and kindest man in the world. And he’s so sexy.”
Sarkozy served as France’s president between 2007 and 2012. Bruni’s news comes after she joined Kate Moss, Hailey Bieber and Austin Butler on the front row of Saint Laurent’s Spring/Summer 2024 fashion show at Paris Fashion Week.
The star, who has previously walked the runway for the fashion house, wore all black to the show, which was held outdoors against the backdrop of a lit-up Eiffel Tower.
