God of War Ragnarok is getting a surprise DLC release next week on December 12 titled Valhalla that introduces a roguelike mode – and it’s absolutely free.
The add-on content was announced as part of The Game Awards 2023 and promises more enemies to rip into after the franchise’s latest entry finished its story last year. It’s unclear just how much the DLC focuses on story elements, but it does seem to at least give PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 players more back-and-forth conversations between Kratos and Mimir. Judging by the trailer, below, it seems Sony’s God of War will find himself traveling between various environments when Valhalla drops next week. Additionally, as teased toward the end of the footage, it looks like players will encounter a cyclops, potentially suggesting a substantial tie back to Greek mythology.
Embark with Kratos to Valhalla on a deeply personal and reflective journey towards a future he never thought possible,” PlayStation says in the description of its trailer. “Master challenges of mind and body on an unraveling adventure that blends the beloved combat from God of War Ragnarök with brand new elements inspired by the roguelite genre.”
Considering God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok take place back-to-back and Kratos is traveling with Mimir, it seems reasonable to assume Valhalla takes place after the events of the 2023 title. In our 10/10 review of Santa Monica Studios’ latest, we called it, “An enthralling spectacle to behold and an even more exciting one to take the reins of, God of War Ragnarok melds action and adventure together to create a new, unforgettable Norse saga.”
