Ryan O’Neal died earlier this month at the age of 82 – and at his burial on Saturday, only one of his four children attended. The Oscar-nominated actor died from congestive heart failure on December 8. This past weekend he was laid to rest next to his longtime lover Farrah Fawcett.
However, friends of the actress claimed that she wanted to be cremated and was buried against her wishes. They added that she wanted her ashes sent to Texas, where she’s from. Ryan’s son Patrick was his only child who attended his funeral. Noticeably absent was his daughter Tatum, 60, and his sons Griffin, 59, and Redmond, 38.
Griffin spoke to The New York Post, claiming that he wasn’t told about the funeral. “I wasn’t even invited to send him off,” he said.
“I’m the hated son who told the truth. Dark times in this family,” he continued, “Love means never having to say you’re sorry — and Ryan never did, to anyone.”
The actor’s son has been open about his tumultuous relationship with his father, claiming that Ryan gave him cocaine for the first time when he was 11 years old. “He was a very abusive, narcissistic psychopath. He gets so mad he can’t control anything he’s doing,” Griffin said in a 2009 interview with Vanity Fair.
He also blamed his struggle with drug addiction on his family. “My life has been a reign of drug and alcohol degradation,” Griffin said in a 2015 interview with PEOPLE, “I had to self-medicate my entire life because there was pain everywhere.”
“There were drugs everywhere in my family all day, every day,” he added.
Griffin is one of two children that Ryan shared with his ex-wife Joanna Moore – the other child being Tatum. His only child who attended the funeral, Patrick, was a result of Ryan’s second marriage to actress Leigh Taylor-Young. Farrah and Ryan shared a son, Redmond.
Farrah and Ryan dated from 1979 to 1997, and then reconciled in 2001 until her death in 2009. After her death, it became apparent how estranged Ryan was from his children.
He banned Griffin from attending the actress’ funeral. He also famously hit on his daughter Tatum at the funeral, not realising she was his daughter.
